Stand on that spot and look to the light source. You'll warp into a secret level and Mario will get wings. Fly to the middle small tower and there is the switch. After pushing it, just fall down from the tower. You will appear in the castle again.

I think you mean "star of the fortress" on the 2nd course, "Whomps fortress". Well, you need to have either unlocked Mario, or find a Mario cap in that course. The Mario cap make you look like Mario and you can do anything Mario can do. Now, theres a brick somewherein the course. How to find it: First, go around the edge of the course dodging enimies and jumping over gaps. You will find a box with those bullets shooting out of it. Jump over it and jump over the gap in front of you. Theres a brick on that peice of land after the gap. Bust it if youre Mario. Then hit the star switch. Now be quick; run all around the edge until you find the star. Jump up and the glass or whatever it is will break and you will get the star.
