If you become a vampire lord then (not when Harkon asks you in the beginning) you can complete the dawnguard quest and be a vampire lord

I assume that the Dawn Guard expansion may provide a vampire transformation, and that there is an ordinary form of vampirism that applies to active effects like in oblivion.
