This varies from area to area. I live in a smoke free zone which means I cannot use wood as a fuel on my open fire; 700 yards up the road is the boundary to a different housing zone where wood can be used as a fuel. Best way to find out is to ring your local council.
Burn it in a controlled burn. Wood is a natural resource and should be returned to its natural settings. To chip and spread unused wood around the land is a good thing. how could it hurt when in its natural surroundings and mixed in with the soil.
