∙ 15y agoIn Wisconsin as of yet it is illegal for anyone other than a licensed veterinarian to administer the rabies vaccination. I've heard that you can purchase them and have them shipped but it isn't legal here. A bill is in progress waiting to be approved that would allow certified veterinary technicians to administer the rabies vaccination under direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian.

∙ 14y agoNo you cannot purchase the Rabies vaccine in California or in most states. Only a licensed Veterinarian can purchase the vaccine and administer the vaccine. Rabies is such a deadly disease to all mammals, including man, that there must a be a check on this. A lot of people could just say to anyone, "oh I gave him or her their Rabies vaccine" and not have done it. I give all the other vaccines myself but Rabies must be given by a Veterinarian so you have proof that the animal received the vaccine. Wouldn't that assure you if you were bitten by a dog or cat and know that when you hear from the owner and proof is presented to you that the dog or cat in question actually did get their vaccine. You would not have to just take someone's word that they did give the vaccine themselves? So that is the reason for the the vaccine for Rabies is to be given by a Veterinarian only.

They also have other medications and vaccinations. It saves a lot of trouble and expense by not having to haul all the animals down to the vet! Well, I'll one up the answer above... YES, you can have the Rabies vaccine shipped to your house in the state of Ohio (it is one of the few states as of right now that it is not illegal to ship it to); however, I must tell you that according to the state of Ohio your dog will not be deemed Rabies vaccinated because it was not given by a licensed veterinarian. In which case, if your dog ever bit anyone it would be put through the same quarantine and procedure as a dog that has never been rabies vaccinated. If you are unfamiliar with this, the dog is in quarantine for 10 days, no contact with any animals what-so-ever and minimal interaction with humans, if within those 10 days the dog shows symptoms that could be foreseen as a potential rabies case - well the dog will be euthanized and tested for rabies. All in all, it's just better to do it at a veterinarian.
