Yes, in the case of TMobile I bought a prepaid tmobile phone and have been able to use it for my postpaid tmobile account. The sim card was smaller so I had to contact them to transfer my phone number. I know that Virgin phones can only be used with their carrier but I'm not sure what other carriers rules are.

These days, as long as you are out of a contract you can "unlock" your phone and it bring it to another network.
After you've unlocked your phone you can simply insert a new SIM card into your device and then purchase minutes from the prepaid provider of your choice.
I've had good luck with Straight Talk. You might be interested in their "Bring Your Own Phone" product but I know AT&T and others have similar programs.

∙ 11y agoAbsolutely. The change is made in the service-provider's computer system - it has nothing to do with the actual handset. HOWEVER - You would either have to wait until your contract has expired or 'buy yourself out' of any remaining months.
