If you close Firefox during a download, you'll lose it. You can press Ctrl+J to open the downloads window. If the downloads window is open you can close Firefox.

I use Google Chrome for my daily surfing, but when I'm downloading and programming I will switch to Firefox. Also, I'm waiting for Google Chrome to get some extensions so I don't have to use Firefox.
