Yes, there are two independent brake line systems running diagonally in a car and each one (i.e. left front/right rear & right front/left rear) is able to stop the car by itself.
However do not wait to get it repaired, take it in as soon as possible!
In the USA made vehicles the front brakes are independent from the rear brakes, not diagonally. So if you lose front brakes it will stop (poorly and dangerously) on just the rears and vice-versa.

Since my experience with repair has to do with luck and trial and error my honest answer to this question is that my brake repair tools consist of the phone book and usually a guy named Butch or Bubba at the local repair shop. I usually also have a hammer, a screwdriver and some wrenches and I never get too close to a repair job without some bandaids and some triple antibiotic ointment so I can stop the bleeding. Yeah, I know, I'm not much help...

I have one at 250+K....The previous owner had already replaced the head gasket, which is what normally goes on these, and I've been running it for close to 10K now.. A broken fuel line return and a leaking brake line are the only 2 repair probs that I've had . As long as they are maintained they should last a while :)
