The m249 is a heavy, big weapon that is a light machine gun type of weapon. This would be used as a base of fire weapon and is an aeg or auto electric gun using a battery. The UTG L96 is a sniper bolt actionspring rifle used with a one shot, one kill type of mentality. The sniper only shoots one time with each manual cocking of the gun. Whereas the m249 will be an aeg and shoot fully auto with one trigger pull. The benefit to the sniper gun is that it usually shoots a little farther than the aeg's and so can use distance to off-set the discrepancy in rate of fire.
