No. This will disorientate the hamster. Hamsters need at least 12 hours of light a day because they are nocturnal. If it is very cold the hamster will go into hibernation. If this happens do not worry, and do not try to wake the hamster as this can cause a lot of harm to the hamster. Just wait until the hamster has woken up.

Hamsters like to be active at night so making their cage dark will not discourage activity. I recommend keeping hamsters as far away from the bedroom as possible. If that doesn't solve the problem modify the cage to be quieter. Make sure the hamster can't rattle the water bottle and use a metal wheel greased with petroleum jelly to keep wheel noises down. You can tape thick plastic over the metal wheel to keep their legs from falling through and getting skinned.

Mainly your hamster has a cold is of not enough warmth.

Mainly because people put the cages by the window in the winter so air moves to the warm animal.

What to do:

  1. Move your hamster away from the window or into another room
  2. Take a hot towel or a heating pad (low setting) and put it under the cage, not to hot to melt it.
  3. You can put a drop or two of honey in it's water.
  4. If your hamster is running on it's wheel, take the wheel out so it can rest.
  5. If yout hamster is in it's hut (which you should always have) leave it alone (except for cleaning time)
  6. And when cleaning, you can put them in a glass bowl with shaving and it's hut with the heating pad under (low setting so you cannot burn the hamster)
  7. With refusing food, try to get it's favorite treats.
  8. If they are not drinking water, you can use the tube that you can dispense into a mouth. You can get them at drug stores or pharmecies, or at the pet store. Be sure to get the smallest.
  9. Fill th dispeser with water and see if you hamster will walk up to it. Squeeze out a drop or two so they can see what it is.
  10. If they refuse it, put honey and milk with the water.

Hope these tips help!

How can you tell if myhamster doesn't like her cage does the hamster do weird things does the hamster bite the cage does he not like sleep in the middle of the day like hamsters are supposed to do?

Well, lots of hamsters bite their cages, they do that because they need something to chew on, to wear down their teeth or maybe they arehungry. Do you have a proper place for he/she to sleep? In the cage is there an exercise wheel? To loose energy? I don't think hamsters are picky about their cages. If you change the surroundings/cage all of a sudden, He/she might not sleep for a couple of days. I changed my hamsters cage when she was 6 months and it took her 3 days before she would sleep and now a week later she is fine and eating/drinking well.

Can you cover the hamsters cage to keep it warm?

Hi, I wouldn't recommend it. Hamsters do not like warm habitats. It is especially bad if the cage is put near a window that gets warm, a furnace, or where there's a warm draft. Plus, the cage needs to be well lit. Hope that helps a little!

Can hamsters live only in a cage?

Hamsters can live in 10 gallon aquariums (or terrariums). They can live in a plastic cage or a cage with metal bars too. You can also make your own cage, but you must know how. Hamsters also live in the wild in certain parts of the world.
