How much money is spent on a child on birthdays?

If it is a neice or nephew (I have a lot of them). I've been giving them a dollar for each year they are. It was an idea that my boyfriend's mother actually used for her 2 sons. (not neices or nephews). He had turned 52 yrs. old and she gave the cash in dollar bills. I thought it was a neat idea. She would purchase a gift, also.
