Since time immemorial, people have died from stupidity. Watch any news broadcast showing tourists stepping over protective railings at a zoo to get a closer photo of the nice Bengal Tiger, or youthful (and occasionally geriatric) naked sky-divers hurling themselves out of aeroplanes. Or consider the young couple who've left their two-year-old toddler alone in a room with their new pet Pit Bull Terrier,

With the above in mind, the answer becomes axiomatic.

The problem with the gene pool is that it doesn't come with a lifeguard.

It's hard to say. Probably a lot more than one things. Stupidity is synonymous with lack of common sense or sense of complacency that a person gets when they do the same thing, no matter how dangerous it is (or not) every day and fail to pay attention to the warning signs that have been in front of them for quite a while. A sense of fatigue and recklessness can also be synonymous with stupidity, like driving while tired or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. So it really depends on what you associate stupidity with.
