It depends on how bad the withdrawal is, without medical supervision detox can be excruciatingly painful both in the mind and body. That being said if the alcoholic has been drinking very hard "Binge drinker", or if he or she is a long term "daily drinker", in my own personal experience, the drinker can suffer from tremors, heightened anxiety, high blood pressure, at 6 to 8 hours after the last drinking, worsening still into full blown panic attacks, loss of appetite sleep, in 48 to 72 hours he or she can go into a very scary place we call DTs or Delirium tremons where he or she will have lost most cognisance of reality and possibly have a grand maul seizure, this is bad, this can lead to death.
It is highly recommended to do a taper program of 9-30 days of cross related drug tapering using benzo class drugs AKA Valium Starting at a level to reduce anxiety, calm the brain, and the central nervous system. Adding to the detox a nutrient rich diet and hydro therapy. Sleep is a must. A detox center will be able to provide chloral hydrate which in itself is help due to is sedative properties, depending on the weight of the individual, dosing will vary.
Once more, be advised that taking a drinker off alcohol abruptly can due major damage, please get help. You would be surprised at how long the list available for helping alcohol and drug dependence actually is.

Yes, however, it requires a large amount: drinking too much alcohol too fast (faster than the body can metabolize it) will lead to alcohol poisoning, and heavy drinking over the course of years damages many parts of the body, especially the liver.
The biggest concern with alcohol is that it temporarily alters a person's thinking and motor skills, leading to poor judgment and other consequences (i.e., drunk driving).
Alcohol can be consumed safely if done smartly: take it slow and don't drink too much in any one day ("too much" varies from person to person).
