Hydration is critical when suffering from tonsillitis. Additional liquids will keep your energy levels stable and avoid dehydration to occur. If you become dehydrated your recovery time may take longer. Choose cold or lukewarm beverages such as ice water, clear juices or chicken broths. Beverages may be consumed warm, but avoid hot beverages that may further irritate your sore throat. Juices with large amounts of acid should be avoided. These include grapefruit juice, lemonade and Orange Juice. Cola and caffeine-related products such as coffee and tea are also discouraged.

Although milk can soothe a sore throat it is not advised as milk is a very thick liquid that can cause a lot of mucus which leads to discomfort making matters worse, the best thing to do is to drink plenty of water to flush all the toxins and the bacteria out of your system and get plenty of rest. Make sure you are taking anti bio-tics prescriped from your doctor which quicken your recovery

You can, but milk increases phlegm -- the sinus gunk that drains down the back of your throat. The more phlegm that drains, the more you will cough. The more you cough, the more your throat will hurt. So it is better to drink broth, water, and clear fluids.
