The three categories of commercial drivers licenses are: Class A: A holder of this license can drive a combination of vehicles with gross weight in excess of 26,001 pounds and the gross weight of the towed vehicle is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

Class B: A holder of this license can drive a single vehicle with gross weight in excess of 26,001 pounds, or a combination with gross weight in excess of 26,001 pounds if the gross weight of the towed vehicle is less than 10,000 pounds.

Class C: The holder of this license can drive three kinds of vehicles: any vehicle carrying 16 or more people including the driver; any school bus; and any vehicle not requiring a Class A or Class B CDL but which is carrying a placardable quantity of hazardous materials. (The reason this license exists is you can't add endorsements to a non-commercial driver's license, and you need endorsements to carry passengers, drive a school bus or haul hazmat.)

A CDL holder can drive vehicles that are lower than his or her license class, so the answer to your first question is yes, you may drive a straight truck on a Class A CDL.

As to the second question, the answer is also yes: even though it's a straight truck and not a tractor-trailer, you still need to log your time and to follow the 10-hour, 11-hour, 14-hour and either 60-hour or 70-hour rules.

What are class A drivers license?

Class A, both in the case of commercial and non-commercial licences permits the operator to drive combinations over 26,000 lbs. GVWR, in which the vehicle in tow is rated at greater than 10,000 lbs. A Class A CDL doesn't necessarily allow you to drive a tractor-trailer - if you don't road test on one, but rather, some other combination which falls within Class A CDL requirements (for example, Ford F650 and a trailer rated at over 10,000 lbs), you'll get an "8" restriction - No tractor-trailers.

What is the difference between an AZ and DZ license?

An AZ license allows you to drive tractor-trailers and other large commercial vehicles, while a DZ license only permits you to drive straight trucks or other commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating over 11,000 kilograms. In essence, an AZ license covers a broader range of vehicles compared to a DZ license.

What kind of license do you need to drive a semi truck?

In the United States, a semi truck - unless its use falls under one of the exempt categories and criteria defined by the FMCSA (e.g., farm truck exemption, emergency vehicle exemption, et. al) - you need a Class A Commercial Drivers License which does not have the "no air brakes" restriction or the "no tractor-trailers restriction".A full grown Semi tractor trailer: CDL-A (Commercial Drivers License) it will cost you approximately anywhere from $2500 -$5000 to take the course. If you get hired on by certain companys such as Schneider, PAM, USA, England plus others they will either send you to class or teach you themselves. This license allows you to drive other trucks also such as a dump truck, garbage truck etc.... these only require a CDL-B class license. However the reverse is NOT true. If you have a CDL-B you are not qualified to drive a full grown semi tractor trailer. Hope this helps youo. Steve
