The three categories of commercial drivers licenses are: Class A: A holder of this license can drive a combination of vehicles with gross weight in excess of 26,001 pounds and the gross weight of the towed vehicle is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
Class B: A holder of this license can drive a single vehicle with gross weight in excess of 26,001 pounds, or a combination with gross weight in excess of 26,001 pounds if the gross weight of the towed vehicle is less than 10,000 pounds.
Class C: The holder of this license can drive three kinds of vehicles: any vehicle carrying 16 or more people including the driver; any school bus; and any vehicle not requiring a Class A or Class B CDL but which is carrying a placardable quantity of hazardous materials. (The reason this license exists is you can't add endorsements to a non-commercial driver's license, and you need endorsements to carry passengers, drive a school bus or haul hazmat.)
A CDL holder can drive vehicles that are lower than his or her license class, so the answer to your first question is yes, you may drive a straight truck on a Class A CDL.
As to the second question, the answer is also yes: even though it's a straight truck and not a tractor-trailer, you still need to log your time and to follow the 10-hour, 11-hour, 14-hour and either 60-hour or 70-hour rules.
