Best Answer

Yes it is possible to do so - PROVIDED - the account is in credit and the other account owners agree.

It is best to do this in writing (see related question below).

If the account is in arrears (overdrawn) the bank will not let you do this as you are joint and severally liable for the debt.

Can one person remove the other persons name from a joint checking account?

No, they cannot.

Is it illegal to remove your spouse from joint checking account?

No. it is not mandatory to have a joint account with your spouse. If you feel, you no longer wish to have your spouse in your joint account, you can let them know and then contact the bank to remove their name from the accounts joint holders list.

Can you remove your name from a joint checking account without closing it?

At chase both party's have to be there and you can remove your name. I did it. I did not require my partner to be there as I opened another account for myself so it appears to be a bank specific deal.

Why do both parties need to be present to open a joint checking account?

When your name appears on a checking account as maker you are accepting liability for overdrafts made on that account which could impact your credit score. My thoughts are that it is an issue about liability. Also the bank wants to be certain that in the event that the account is overdrawn, they are able to collect against you by having your signature on the contract.

Can only 1 person close a joint checking account?

It turns out that the answer is yes, which was rather a surprise to me. A person I know closed her joint checking account (with her husband) after her divorce, because he kept overdrawing on the account. She tried to have her name removed from the account, but they wouldn't do that without him; however, bizarrely, they were perfectly happy to simply close the account on her say-so. (This may have been practical: they may have just decided "it's better for us to close the account than to take the one person who actually puts money IN off the account.")

HelloYes if you make it a joint checking account with their name on it. They will be able to do all the same things you can. Withdraw, transfer, pay in funds etc.

If your checking account is a joint account with your spouse and it has a negative balance and you file chapter seven what happens to your spouse?

She needs to get a checking account in her own name, which means that you both will need to put money into the joint account until it is at least a zero. If you stiff the bank, then it will not be possible for either of you to get a checking account anywhere until you pay the amount owed. As they say, "you don't want to go there."

Can you have a checking account in your name and require 2 signatures to with draw money with out putting that person joint on your account?

No, typically in order to require two signatures for withdrawing money from a checking account, you would need to add that person as a joint account holder. This means they would have equal access to the account and be able to make transactions independently as well.

Can wife add her name to his checking account without his approval legally?

No she can't as a matter of fact without his written permission she can't even get general information about that account. This is what I found to be amazing, if this couple has a joint savings account, but the husband's name is the only one on the checking account, he is the only one that can legally transfer money from the savings account to the checking account. It also works this way if there is a joint checking account and money needs to be transferred from the joint checking account, to the savings account with only the husband's name on it, he is the only one that can move money from one account to the other. I am a bank manager and I know this is more information than you asked for, but when I have to explain this to couples, it often leads to a very heated discussion between them in my office. I live in Virginia and I can only answer for Virginia. I hope you found this answer helpful.

How do you take someone off joint checking account?

You can visit the bank branch where you hold the joint account and submit a written request to remove your name from the list of account holders for that account. The bank may ask you to get the other holders of that joint account and ask them for approval before doing so.

Can you remove a persons name from your checking account if they are not listed as a primary?

If the person's name is not listed as a primary account holder, you usually cannot remove their name from the account. Only the primary account holder can make changes to the account. A joint account holder can be removed if both parties agree, but it may be best to speak with your bank for specific guidance on your situation.

Member of joint account does what happens for survivorship?

When a joint owner dies their interest passes automatically to the surviving owner. The survivor is the sole owner of the account and can close it or make changes. For example the survivor can take the decedent's name off the new checks for the checking account.
