Yes, they are clearly visible to the naked eye but they normally only come out of their hiding place to bite somebody in their bed when it is totally dark. However if you disturb them in the daytime, such as when you make your bed or turn your mattress or else perhaps move some furniture next to your bed where they are hiding, you may then see them running around to find a new hiding place.

They are flat looking reddish brown insects about the size of a small ant, but the nymphs (baby bedbugs) are smaller but still visible to the naked eye about the size of a grain of rice. The most likely place you will find them hiding when they sleep during the day is in the folds of your bed's mattress but they may be in any crevice or fold in the bed structure or in furniture or the floor or wall very close to where you sleep. So if you do feel really itchy when you wake up in the morning and see little red bite marks on your body, such as on your arms and legs, hunt around these places and try to disturb them.

The other way you can see them is during the night when they come out to have a meal. Remember you, or rather your blood, is their food and they only come out to feed on you when they believe you are asleep, and because they then inject an anaesthetic into you before starting to sip your blood you will probably feel nothing while they are on you even if you wake up. Only after they have completed the meal and left you will the anaesthetic wear off and you may then feel a maddening itch and see the little red marks on you.

But if you suspect you may have a bedbug problem in your bed because you feel itchy, try putting a torch next to you . Then try switching it on and using it to search around your sheets and yourself in the night. You may see one or more hurrying away from the light. The best time to try that is during the hour immediately before sunrise while it is still dark but try to move as little as possible when you feel for the torch and when turning it on, for best chance of seeing them before they rush off to a hiding place out of the torch beam.

Yes bedbugs can be seen. They are about the size of a small ant and will have very flat appearance unless they have had a recent meal when they will be more expanded. Their body is oval shape their fore-wings very short and their mouth parts adapted for piercing and sucking a person's blood. Any bed may have both adult bedbugs in it and smaller nymph. Both suck the blood of the person using that bed and both are clearly visible to the native eye. See other answers in Wiki Answers for more details on them. how they get into your beds, what effect they have and how you can find out if you have got them in your bed. But some answerers on Wiki and elsewhere on the internet habitually seem to get confused between "bedbugs" with "dust mites". They are totally different. Dustmites, unlike bedbugs can not be seen by your eyes alone. You need a microscope to see dust mites but bed bugs can be seen by anybody with the naked eye. Do not confuse these two totally different species. Almost every bed in the world will have dustmites in it. But bedbugs are only in a few unfortunate people's beds although they are known to be increasing rapidly in numbers all over the world.

Bed bugs are very small but they are bigger than a flea so you can see them. You just have to know where to look. If you look on the seams of your bed along the edge. or around where your night stand meets the carpet. Or even along the base boards. If you use white or light colored sheets you might be able to catch them between the sheets sometimes. It's hard to see them because they hide really well. It's even harder to get rid of them.
