Cheese that is made with unpasteurized milk is not safe to eat during pregnancy. Unpasteurized milk is not safe to consume because there is a risk that it contains a bacterium called Listeriamonocytogenes. Listeria is killed during pasteurization and cooking so the majority of the cheeses that are sold in stores are safe. However, soft cheese such as feta, brie, gorgonzola, etc. could contain Listeria. Listeria can cause problems for both the mom and her baby during pregnancy. If you are infected with Listeria, you could suffer a miscarriage, have a preterm birth, pass the infection to the baby, and in some severe cases, have a stillborn. During pregnancy, it's best to read cheese labels and only eat cheese that is labeled as "pasteurized.
