Can you explain why people think you are stuck up because you don't talk when you are shy?

This may sound odd, but when you do not talk to other people, they tend to naturally think you are stuck up rather than shy. It happened to me and years later I found out my own mother thought I was stuck up. It probably won't be easy, but the best thing you can do is to find things you can say to let people know you're not stuck up.
