Fasting per the 3rd Islam five pillars starts by the 1st day and through the whole month of Ramadan (the 9th month in Islam Lunar Calendar). Voluntarily, Muslims may fast Mondays and Thursdays besides the three middle days of the Islamic Lunar months.

∙ 14y agoIt is Sunnah of the prophet to fast on the 10th of the Month of Muharram and it is recommended by the prophet to fast also the 9th of Muharram, if could be afforded. This is in addition to the Sunnah of fasting on the 12th, 13th, and 14th of the month of Muharram and every other month of Hijra Calendar year. However, fasting of any day other than days of Ramadan month is voluntarily and not compulsory...If done you are rewarded and if not done you are not penalized.

The Month of Muharram?
The Muslim calendar is a lunar calendar, 12 months, each month is a moon (from one new moon to the next). That makes the Muslim calendar 11 to 12 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar; a date like the first of Muharram will be like 11 days earlier each year, and gradually change through the different seasons. According to Wikipedia, last time, Muharram started on December 29, 2008. This year it should be 11 or 12 days earlier, but future times are estimates, since the months start when the new moon is actually sighted.
