The definition of a private company is that it's stock is closely held and not traded on an exchange or open market. Hence, you have to have the ones owning it agree to sell it to you at whatever price they decide to...and additionally, the stock frequently has restrictions on who it can be sold to - as in family Cos, just to other meembers of the family.
