The purpose of a generator is to generate electricity. An electric generator would be redundant. It would need electricity to make electricity and when there is a power outage there is not electricity.
Originates from the power company's (usually the local utility) grid where they generate electric power for sale and distribution.
A gas generator generates electricity and can be used as a backup in a power outage. I am not certain what you mean by an electric generator. If there was a power outage, how would an electric generator work?
You can purchase an electric power generator, but it won't do you much good if the electric goes out. A kerosene or deisel generator would be a better choice.
Your normal electric power is made to power all of your household. A generator requires much more maintenance, so if you have the option of using normal electric power, there is much less hassle. The generator can be kept for emergencies.
To generate clocks and to generate power
An electric power generator is a generator the converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. That way you can get energy from the generator to produce electricity to places like your home.
You can't use a motor to power a generator and use the output of that generator to power the motor. Some energy will be lost at each step making the hookup pointless. But you can use a combustion engine to power an electric generator and use that electricity to power auxillary systems around the engine.
Flowing or falling water can be harnessed to turn a waterwheel or spin a turbine, either of which can be connected to a generator. The kinetic energy of water (imparted by gravity) is converted into electric power by that generator.

You don't attach a battery to the bicycle but yes you can generate electricity with a bike generator. You use a bike training stand to hold the bike up, mount a DC permanent magnet generator to the wheel, connect the generator through a charge controller to the batteries, and the batteries to an inverter which will then power electronics.
