It is okay to genetically modify plants and animals if it does not endanger the rest of the ecosystem. Plants can be modified just so that they can have certain desirable effects like more resistance to disease and ability to bear more fruit.

Im not sure exactly what you are asking. You can't really genetically modify an animal after it is grown, but yes, scientists quite regularly modify animals while they are in the embryo stage. An example of this taking place is when cows were genetically modified to produce milker with a higher protein content.
