History of General StudiesThe term General Studies is rooted in the vocabulary of medieval universities. From studia generalia, which once described students outside of the local population, General Studies now refers to a humanities degree earned by adult learners and part-time students. These students are also known as non-traditional students.General Studies became popular at some colleges in the 194s when many soldiers returning from World War II took advantage of the GI Bill, which provided funds for college education and vocation training to returning veterans. At Universities such as Columbia University, the General Studies degree was designed to cater to students with non-traditional backgrounds and educational needs. The General Studies DegreeA Bachelor of General Studies is generally offered to non-traditional students who have interrupted their college studies.Often attending college part or half-time, General Studies students take the same courses with the same flexibility of other Humanities programs, but may have fewer requirements with increased flexibility in coursework.Students enrolled in a General Studies degree often have the freedom to build part of their course curriculum or even to structure the entirety of their coursework. Many General Studies students are transfer students and this flexibility gives them the freedom to apply credits from a former field of study, for example Communication or History, to a General Studies major.General Studies program are offered a variety of colleges.General Studies degrees are offered by community colleges, universities, Ivy League colleges, and online colleges.Classes on campus are often schedule during evenings and weekends to appeal to working students.Universities with General Studies colleges may offer reduced tuition for General Studies students in an effort to address the practical issues faced by working students.General Studies Colleges may also offer specified degrees in the area of General Studies including degree programs in Literature, Fine Arts, and History.Online General Studies DegreesOnline degree programs in General Studies offer degrees on all levels from an associate’s degree to a doctoral degree. The University of Phoenix, Regent University, and Ivy Bridge College offer an Associate of Arts in General Studies.Northern Illinois University, Drexel University, and Texas Tech University are just a few of the online colleges offering a Bachelor of General Studies.Masters programs in General Studies are offered by Tiffin University, and Fort Hays State University.
