When do babies have to get a passport?

Yes, infants need passports, even newborns. Also both parents must sign the forms. Your baby may be small, but he'll still need a passport to travel internationally. Because the process can take six weeks or more, it's important that you apply for your infant's passport as soon as you know you'll be traveling. For an extra fee, you may be able to get the passport in as little as two weeks, however.

Is a passport required for a child to go to Mexico?

Beginning in June 2009, a passport or alternative document such as a "passport card" will be required for travel by land and sea, but special provisions will be made to allow school or other organized groups of children ages 18 and under who are US or Canadian citizens to enter the US with proof of citizenship alone. In order to prevent international child abductions, minors traveling without their parents, or with only one parent, may be asked to present proof that they have their parents' authorization for travel. * A minor traveling unaccompanied by his or her parents must carry a notarized letter signed by the parents authorizing the travel. * If only one parent is traveling with the child, they may be asked to show either documents proving they have sole legal custody of the child, or a notarized letter from the other parent authorizing the child to travel outside the country of origin. To see the requirements and obtain the forms to get your child a passport, please see this government website: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/minors/minors_834.html
