This depends upon your counselor/psychiatrist - some will write a medical prescription for you to have a service or therapy dog. However, the dog will need to be trained and certified as a service dog before the prescription will mean anything.

What is separation anxiety disorder?

well, separation anxiety is when somebody loves you so much that when they are without you (even only for a little bit) they panic. It usually happens to rescue dogs. As they have been passed on, they have lost a lot of owners so they love you for rescuing them and they get very attached to you. It happened to my dog. He chewed the house to pieces when we went out! He even once managed to poen the window and let himself out into the street. The handle on the window has been broken ever since. If you have a dog who has very bad separation anxiety, see a dog physiologist. That's what I had to do.

Are french bulldogs supposed to be scared all the time?

No, a scared dog is an insecure dog. The dog is insecure because it is either not regularly reassured by the alpha of the pack (the owner of the dog), is being intimidated by another dog, or is suffering from an anxiety disorder. This dog needs some serious training and the owner needs to take charge if the dog is ever to get better. The training should involve building the dogs confidence. Also you should take the dog to their vet to check for an anxiety disorder which may be treated with medication.

What are some symptoms of separation anxiety in a dog?

Separation Anxiety Disorder, or SAD, is common among dogs who were separated from their mother to early on or have been abandoned before. Symptoms are nervousness, howling and barking when left alone. To help prevent this, keep your dog entertained when you are out by providing lots of distractions (food filled toys, bones etc.).

How can you help your dog with her anxiety?

There are generally two parts to managing anxiety - reducing the triggers and managing the routine. First, you should set a routine: breakfast at a certain time, go for a walk at a certain time, take the same route on the walk, etc. As her environment becomes more predictable, her anxiety should lessen. Second, you should try to identify triggers for her anxiety - strangers at the door, the sound of thunder, etc. When possible, try to reduce the occurrence of these triggers. Also, consultation with a veterinary behaviorist may be a great help. This is a person who has studied animal behavior and can help you slowly desensitize your dog to her anxiety triggers. A veterinary behaviorist can also often prescribe anti-anxiety medications to help take the edge off while she is learning to handle the anxiety.

Is it better to get 2 dogs or puppies than 1 to help with separation anxiety?

If your existing dog already has separation anxiety, it MAY help to get another dog. See if you can borrow a neighbor's dog to come over for the day and see how your dog reacts. YOu can also try doggy daycare. However, with most dogs it doesn't seem to help that much. In addition, if your first dog is not trained, you now have 2 dogs to worry about. I would not recommend purchasing a second dog simply because your first dog has separation anxiety. If you considering purchasing 2 puppies/dogs at the same time I would also be very careful. Despite having to do twice the training, 2 puppies often bond a lot to each other. This sounds like a good thing in that they are less likely to have separation anxiety when you leave, however they often bond so much with each other that they have bad anxiety when they are separated. If you do decide to get 2 puppies at the same time, then make sure you separate them a lot so their bond is primarily to you and not each other.
