Yes there will be some pain, discomfort etc..because you had surgery..your skin and tissue beneath the skin were cut. Your numbness and tingling in the fingers should subside from that day to several weeks just depending on how much swelling you are having. There are also many other factors that can delay your CTS surgery healing from smoking to lawyers! Check link for complete details.

If you went back to your normal duties that caused you to have CTS that may bring back the symptoms. I was told that I shouldn't go back to my normal job since it will come back.

It will take time for the surgery itself to heal and for you to finish rehab exercises. It does vary but it should feel better in 2-3 weeks.

This would be extremely rare, Carpel Tunnel Syndrome usually occurs over a long period of time, not in one event.

Do I need a lawyer for my carpal tunnel claim?

You may not, it just depends on your work comp states law and your company's insurance. First of all it has to be determined to be work related from your job. Then you have to show/prove that you have an impairment (typically determined after carpal tunnel surgery by a specialist) If your are given an impairment rating, say of 5% to the right hand, then this is typically given a dollar amount based on your job/occupation etc..for your state. They will either offer you a lump sum settlement and closed medicals ie you can't come back for more money for treatment..or give you a smaller settlement with open medicals ie you can continue to get treatment as needed. Note that your lawyer will get 25-33% of your settlement off of the top, so if you can settle with your company etc..you might come out better,BUT if they are low balling you, then you may need to get an attorney..but he/she will need to get at least 25-33% more settlement just to break even..and obtaining an attorney can delay the whole case, sometimes by years because the company will play hard ball as well. Keep in mind many people have CTS (carpal tunnel syndrome) and or the surgery w/o any impairment! (ie you are better and there is no residual weakness/symptoms etc..)

Is a neurological surgeon better for carpal tunnel syndrome surgery than a hand surgeon?

Neurosurgeons' area of expertise is the body's nerves - for that reason alone, they are always preferred when dealing with any surgery that involves a nerve being compressed for any reason. Having said that, you should also never submit to any proposed surgery unless all other methods of non-invasive treatment have been taken. Surgery doesn't always go as predicted, and you can come out worse rather than better. Surgery should only be an option (and should only be proposed as a last resort by any competent doctor) when all other methods have failed.
