Gout usually occurs in middle aged men of up to the mid-40s. It tends often to be accompanied in this group with obesity, high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and heavy alcohol use. Gout can also develop in the elderly, occurring equally in men as in women. In the elderly it is often associated with kidney problems and /or the use of diuretics. and is less often associated with alcohol use. Before menopause, women have a significantly lower risk of developing gout, (Only about 15% of female gout cases occur before menopause.) After menopause the risk of developing gout increases in women. At age 60 the incidence of gout is equal in men and women, and after 80, gout occurs more often in women.
