After Jasper 'takes a snap' at Bella when she cuts her finger at her birthday party with the Cullen's, Edward becomes distant. Finally, he tells Bella that his family is leaving. She begs him to stay, but when he tells her that "he doesn't want her anymore' she lets him go.
She spends the next several months in a sort of trance, always depressed, feeling like she has had a hole cut in her. After a while, she begins to visit Jacob on the reservation while he fixes two old motorcycles she got.
She learns that when she is in a dangerous situation, she can imagine Edward's voice telling her to stop and to be safe, and she thinks that motorcycles would be a great way to stalk her hallucinations.
Bella and Jacob become close, and Bella sees that Jacob wishes to have more than just a friendship. Though she feels almost happy around Jacob, she is still hurting from losing Edward.
After a movie with Jacob, he complains that he is feeling very strange. Bella doesn't see him for a while. She gets worried and calls him everytime she can, but no one answers.
When she drives to his house to see him, he is with Sam and acting unlike himself. When Bella goes home that night, Jacob sneaks into her room and tells her that he cannot tell her whats going on, but begs her to guess. She has a dream, and realizes that he is a werewolf.
Jacob and his pack mates, all friendly and kind to her, go about making sure that the vampire Victoria cannot get to Bella.
Bella is still seeking thrills that will let her hear Edward's voice again, so she goes alone out to the beach to go cliff diving into the water. Unfortunately, things go wrong, and Jacob has to pull her, barely alive, out of the water.
When she gets home after the incident, she is shocked to see one of the Cullen's cars in her driveway. Alice had seen Bella jumping off the cliff, and, fearing the worst, had come to see if her vision was true. Not knowing the falseness of Alice's vision, Rosalie had called Edward and said that Bella had committed suicide because of him.
They rush to Italy, for Alice saw that Edward planned to pull a Romeo and ask the Volturi to kill him. Bella barely makes it in time to stop him, but they still have the menacing Volturi to deal with.
Edward talks them out of the situation, but not without Alice having to promise to the Volturi's leader, Aro, that Bella would become a vampire someday, no matter Edward's reluctance.
When they all get home, Edward tells Bella that he had only left to protect her from him, and that he still loved her.
Bella takes Edward to his family, where, requested by Bella, they take a vote on her immortality. Everyone but Rosalie and Edward vote for Bella to become a vampire. In the end Bella and Edward's relationship is mended perfectly.
