An open question is a question where the person cannot give a complete answer just by saying yes or no. Most question that start with any of the "question" words (who, what, when, where, why, how) are open questions. Closed questions generally start with a verb (do, are, have, etc.). "how do you do this?" -- any question that will let people give you a paragraph or two is a good open ended question. You just have to make them all center around the holiday.
