"Cheer up--things will get better" is a common platitude friends say when I feel depressed.

The Priest spoke more platitudes than Biblical preaching!

Using platitudes often makes a distressed person feel worse, even though the speaker means well.

Platitudes often started off as brilliant sayings, but have become stale and overused, such as "An apple a day will keep the doctor away!"
