Abstinence is a form of religious self-discipline practice that is held sacred (as Jesus & Virgin Mary practiced it) by Roman Catholics. Also, many argue that a man needs, by nature, some sort of "physical" contact in their life, and priests aren't getting that physical contact. But Roman Catholics believe in transubstantiation (bread & wine offerings at Mass turning into the TRUE, NOT SYMBOLIC body and blood of Christ), so if one's a true Catholic believer they know the bread & wine sacraments, PHYSICAL & tangible things, are enough to satisfy not only the spiritual but also physical needs of contact of any Christian, including priest.

Another major reason is because they chose the lifestyle of a priest, which is a very busy one and demands them to be ready to perform their duties and execution of sacrements (visiting dying, baptisms, etc.) at any time; not to be delayed by personal commitments in this case marriage or kids, which anyone who is a parent'd know how hectic it can get.

However, there are R. Catholic priest who are married and have kids, but this can only happen if the man had been some kind of clergyman/minister on his previous religion (Episcopal, Baptist, Methodist, etc.). But this occurs rarely because these candidates've to undergo special investigations by the Vatican itself in order for this to not become a trend among men who are conscious of this canon law and wish to use it for their deceivous benefit of becoming both a priest & familyman silmultaneously. But those who are currently both can tell you from their own experiences how straining and overwhelming being a priest and husband/dad can be.

Can a resigned Catholic priest marry?

A priest who resigns is considered to have resigned from the Church itself and is no longer considered as a Catholic. Since he is no longer Catholic he is free to do as he pleases. However, a priest can remain in the Church as a Catholic if he is laicized. To be laicized the bishop of the diocese would have to declare the priest's Holy Orders as null and void. In other words, he would no longer be a priest. He, too, would be free to marry but would still be considered a Catholic.

If married can you be a priest?

In the Roman Catholic Church, it is required that a priest be celibate. This is to keep the priest from being distracted from doing God's will as a priest. However, if an Anglican or Orthodox priest who is married converts to Catholicism he is able to become a Catholic priest and keep his wife. In the Eastern Catholic Church though, the priests are allowed to marry though. Lutheran and Episcopalian Priests are allowed to marry as well.

Does the Catholic Church recognize marriage if a Catholic woman marries in a Episcopalian Church?

Any marriage, which takes place in the Catholic Church, is valid. When one wishes to marry, one should contact his local priest; the priest will give instructions to the couple and the non-Catholic must agree to raise the children in the Catholic Faith. If the priest determines that the intentions of the couple are in union with Church teachings, he will permit the marriage. However, if one were to marry outside the Church...the Marriage is not valid.
