Nor should you lay your hand out flat to a cow when feeding her grass or hay because she'll try to eat your hand AND the grass. When hand-feeding cattle, keep your hand balled up in a fist with two-thirds of the grass you pulled up sticking out. This allows the cow to wrap her tongue around the grass and pull it in her mouth. Make sure you let go at the right time so she gets most of it in her mouth and not on the ground. This means resisting the temptation to pull your hand away suddenly when her slimy rough tongue touches your hand.
