No. It's a figure of speech, a way of expressing one's unhappiness.
A broken heart (or heartbreak) is a common metaphor used to describe the intense emotional pain or suffering one feels after losing a loved one, through death, divorce, break up, moving, being rejected, or other means.
Heartbreak is usually associated with losing a spouse or loved one, though losing a parent, child, pet, or close friend can also "break one's heart". The phrase refers to the physical pain one may feel in the chest as a result of the loss. Although "heartbreak" is usually a metaphor, there is a condition - appropriately known as "broken heart syndrome" - where a traumatizing incident triggers the brain to distribute chemicals that weaken heart tissue.
Literally? Not very likely.
But in the metaphorical use of the word meaning sadness, yes it can happen.
Answer:
Can a hear break? Literally, of course it can and does. Heart attacks are hearts quite literally breaking in the same way any mechanism breaks down. Metaphorically hearts break too often. It is easy, when suffering the great damage a breaking heart can cause, to point a finger and assign blame to the one believed to break it. Our hearts break, we believe because of love. It is not, however, love that is causing this heart break it is possessiveness and a self centered view point that is causing this heart break. We, all of us, can develop an infatuation for another and this infatuation can be the source of elation, agitation, comfort, discomfort and confusion. When we dare reach out and express our enamored hearts and are rebuked and faced with rejection it causes emotional pain. That pain is a good sign that love was not the primary objective.
Love is not an emotion it is a state of mind and ideal only realized when we willingly let go of ourselves and embrace others with no conditions, no requirements, just acceptance and well wishing. This is love. What we feel for another in regards to sexual and emotional desire can seem like love but it is not. It is, sadly, just our Biology imposing its will upon our spirit. When we rise above that biology and allow our spirit to impose over flesh the commitment towards compassion and charity then we are loving and whether it be one we desire emotionally and sexually or whether it be one we simply recognize as someone in need of love, when we grant that love we are better for it. In the end, love does not rule us as love is a commitment we can either endeavor to aspire towards or not. Breaking hearts are just like any thing else that is broken, messes to be cleaned up and fixed.
