Farsightedness is also called hyperopia, and this is a condition where the light rays are focused behind the eye, which results in blurred vision. Younger patients can "accommodate" or move their lens within the eye to overcome this problem and maintain sharp focus. As one gets older, they lose the ability to accommodate and thus need glasses for distance, and glasses for reading at an earlier age.

LASIK can reshape the eye and repair this problem. It is FDA approved for farsightedness with or without astigmatism in a large range of corrections. Many farsighted patients are extremely happy with LASIK results because of the help that they get at both distance and near. Some patients treated especially with older laser technologies, have experienced regression and lost some of the effect, so it is important to have a newer technology laser for this treatment.

This is not to be confused with presbyopia, which is where the lens loses its ability to focus and near vision become blurred while distance vision is clear. Many farsighted patients think that they have only presbyopia or "old eyes" but this is not necessarily true and in fact they may have some component which can be helped with LASIK surgery.

How effective is lasik?

Lasik is a very effective eye surgery. Nearsighted or farsighted patients usually get excellent results with Lasik vision correction procedure. Progress in Lasik technology during the last years has also translated to a higher chance of obtaining 20/20 or better vision. According to available statistics, more than 90 percent of patients who have Lasik done obtain 20/40 or better vision after procedure and no longer have to use eyeglasses or contact lenses; 55 percent of patients get 20/20 or better vision after Lasik. The FDA found that complications take place in 1% to 5% of Lasik procedures.

Does lasik surgery only cure distance?

No. LASIK is routinely performed on individuals who are nearsighted, farsighted, and have astigmatism. For those patients who are approaching middle age and are noticing a change in their near vision (needing over-the-counter or prescription reading glasses), having LASIK will not correct their near vision. There is a modification we can make to the LASIK procedure called monovision which does allow them to see well up close in one eye and see well far away in the other. Hope that helps!

How do you cure mixed astigmatism?

LASIK is a surgical procedure that uses a laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. In LASIK, a thin flap in the cornea is created using either a microkeratome blade or a femtosecond laser. The surgeon folds back the flap, then removes some corneal tissue underneath using an excimer laser. The flap is then laid back in place, covering the area where the corneal tissue was removed. With nearsighted people, the goal of LASIK is to flatten the too-steep cornea; with farsighted people, a steeper cornea is desired. LASIK can also correct astigmatism by smoothing an irregular cornea into a more normal shape.
