Cats, like people, grieve when they lose one another. Your cat is probably grieving the loss of its family member. Give your cat extra attention and love. You may consider getting another cat, perhaps adopting an adult cat that is around 5 or so. You can contact your local shelter or cat rescue organization. Vets recommend having more than 1 cat, as cats are very social creatures. Their reputation as loner stems from them sleeping 16 hours a day so they seem like they don't socialize.

It may sound odd if no one has suggested this to you before - but, meow back at the cat. Practice to get the same tone and length as the meow your cat is making. It satisfies their need to hear a response. This too may tend to annoy you, but it is proven to work in many, many cases like yours.
