A male and female gerbil kept together in a cage will reproduce at a rate of about one litter (usually 3 - 7 babies) per month.Gerbils are very friendly and social animals, and don't like living alone. Rotastak cages are generally good for gerbils but can come with an excessive amount of tubes/tunnels etc. gerbils just won't use that kind of thing. You could use a plain one story aquarium as well, your gerbil would need some other things to keep it entertained as well though. I recommend a pair of smallish aquariums as gerbils love to dig in the bedding and will push it onto the floor in a wire cage. i usally put 4 inchs of bedding on the floor as well as tissue boxs and toilet paper tubes. i wouldn't put anything in the cage that's not ceramic or metal unless you don't mind them chewing on it. the most important part of a gerbils cage is, another gerbil :3

Are gerbils allergic to sawdust?
They are not necessarily allergic to it but sawdust is not recommended for gerbils as they love to burrow and it can get in there eyes. This also includes pine and cedar wood shavings which are hazardous. I use simple unscented wood shavings that won't cause respiritory problems and fill the cage 1/3 to 1/2 full so thy can burrow. You could also use shredded paper but the cage will have to be cleaned more often.
