You can land the plane on the water. I don't think you can land it on the island.
You can land the plane on the island, but you have to get the plane slow enough and have a big enough space to land. I finally got to land and you can climb out and walk. There are some more spots that you can get but you have to be on foot to get them.

However, once you get 80 points, you do unlock a vacation home on the island with the "Private Island" I point.
