Added: (in the US) members of certain religions, who conscientiously object to sitting in judgment on others, or those suffering from physical disabilities, etc, can be excused from jury duty. However, EVERYONE, even if they believe that they have a valid reason to be excused from serving, must present it to the court for approval. Only the court can excuse you. Plain out--and-out refusal to report for jury duty is not an excuse.
