Why does plastic water bottles melt when you put hot water in it?

Basically air is forced inside a small piece of hot plastic and it expands like a balloon, except that this 'balloon' is inside a form or mold in the shape of the bottle. It is cooled and the bottle shape stays. If the softening point of the bottle is lower than the hot liquid poured in, then the plastic 'balloon' wants to shrink again.
