A sister-in-law can be your 1.wife's sister, 2.your brother's wife, or lastly a sister in law also can be 3.your wife's brother's wife.

Your wife's sister- You cannot legally be married to two women so this would actually be your ex sister-in-law. There is nothing biblically nor unlawful about marrying your ex sister in law. Your brother's wife- Again since someone cannot be married to two people at the same time you must be asking if you can marry your brother's ex-wife which is your "ex"sister in law. 1.In The Bible days this was tradition. If your brother died and his wife was barren the younger brother would take her as his wife. There is nothing Biblically wrong nor is it unlawful to do in the unfortunate event of the death of your brother. This may be politically incorrect to some, albeit fairly common.

2. If your brother is alive and they divorce she is your "ex" sister in law. The Bible does not speak against this directly but one must wonder if you were not and are not coveting your brother's wife. If it is something that just takes place later in years there is nothing biblically wrong or unlawful about it, although some may feel it is politically incorrect and may cause distress among family members. Wife's brother's wife-You cannot legally be married to two people at the same time. So this would mean you were divorced and your wife's brother is also divorced making her your "ex" sister in law. This is a big coincidence and would have to make you ask yourself if you were not coveting your brother in law's wife. but the same thing applies as with your brother's ex-wife. If there was a death and both your spouses died in an accident this can being people together and there is nothing Morally, Biblically or lawfully wrong about this. So in an extreme circumstance this may not be be coveting but on a normal circumstance you would have to ask yourself how long did you lust after her.

Your father or mother's daughter- This would actually be your step-sister or your half-sister not your sister in law. The Bible unambiguously says "the nakedness of your father's wife's daughter, begotten of thy father, she is your sister, you will not uncover her nakedness." Your father or mother's daughter with another partner is your half-sister. Your half-sister is your sister not your sister in law and this is morally and biblically wrong. This will cause birth defects in your children. 2.Your father's wife's daughter from a previous marriage is your step-sister and it is not biblically wrong to marry her, although it is politically incorrect and can possibly cause problems in a family. This is not lawfully wrong but is something that should be considered deeply before doing. Although in some cultures it is a common practice to marry within the same family without marrying blood relatives.
