If the mailbox is on the other side of the sidewalk closer to the street then is it the county's property and it is a federal offense to mess with it but if it is in your property then yes you can do whatever you wish with it.

Actually, in most cities the government does own the first 15 ft of your front yard. The good part is that they have to maintain it if there is a sewer break, etc. But technically it is theirs, not yours.

Others have their own mailbox sitting in front of their home. But i think the idea of delivering mail straight to the house just doesn't happen anymore,like,the milkman.
