BB King Known as the King of the Blues, guitarist B.B. King has been performing and recording since the 1940s. He grew up sharecropping in Mississippi and learned to play Gospel Music on the guitar when he was a teenager. In the late 1940s he turned to playing blues and moved to Memphis, Tennessee to start a music career. After popular performances in clubs and on radio, he kicked off his recording career with "Three O'Clock Blues" (1951), a top hit on the R&B charts. King's early records in the '50s produced some R&B hits, but mainstream success eluded him. He and his band toured almost non-stop, performing hundreds of shows a year and building an audience. He finally had breakthrough success in the late 1960s, when white audiences began to discover rock's debt to the blues. Guitarists like http://www.answers.com/topic/eric-clapton and http://www.answers.com/topic/keith-richards sang his praises, and King began performing in rock and jazz clubs and had crossover hits like "Paying The Cost To Be The Boss" (1968) and "The Thrill Is Gone" (1970). King has recorded more than 50 albums, won 13 Grammys and received dozens of awards and honors over the years, and he still performs four or five nights a week. King is known for his distinctive sound, especially his use of the sliding "bent" note, and for calling his electric Gibson guitar "Lucille." His albums include Live At The Regal (1965), Blues Is King(1967), Deuces Wild (1997) and Blues On The Bayou(1998). King owns night clubs in Memphis, Los Angeles and New York City... He originally called himself Beale Street Blues Boy, which he shortened to Blues Boy King and then B.B. King... In 1996 he published an autobiography, Blues All Around Me.

W.C. Handy (1873-1958) - Blues Musician

Considered the "Father of the Blues," W.C. Handy first heard the Blues being played by a lone Bluesman at the railroad depot in Tutwiler, Mississippi, in 1903. Handy obviously did not create the Blues, but he is the first person to publish a composition with the term "Blues" in the title and utilizing "blue notes" (flatted thirds and sevenths). This song - "Memphis Blues," published in 1912, along with his famous "St. Louis Blues" two years later, first brought the genre to the mass public. This is the man after whom the Handy Awards (the Blues "Grammys") are named.

Mamie Smith (1883-1946) - Blues Musician

This is the woman that started it all, as far as Blues on record. Her "Crazy Blues" is considered the first Blues recording ever. The record sold an incredible million copies in the first six months! This success opened the floodgates, as record labels and talent scouts began to scour the country for more Blues singers to record..Ma Rainey (1886-1939) - Blues Musician

Considered the "Mother of the Blues," Ma Rainey was instrumental in bringing Blues music into the vaudeville tradition. She was a mentor to many of the classic women Blues singers that followed. She had been performing the Blues for twenty years before her first recording in 1923. She would go on to record with such Blues legends as Blind Blake and Tampa Red, along with Jazz greats Kid Ory and Louis Armstrong.

.Big Bill Broonzy (1893-1958) - Blues Musician

Big Bill Broonzy, through the years, was a most versatile performer, being equally adept at solo acoustic Folk-style, Ragtime, and early urban small combo Chicago Blues. He was one of the first artists to spread the Blues overseas, in addition to being a major force and mentor to many fellow Blues Musicians stateside. Broonzy was an exceptional guitarist, fine singer, and exceptional songwriter.

I hope that helped!! :]
