sometimes it happens trust me i would know!! OR Chickens retain few nutrients from the food they eat, so they must eat constantly. They pretty much eat & poop non-stop.

It depends on the breed. If you are raising standard breeds, then generally no. Chicks should be offered all the food and water they can eat and drink, and switched to adult feed as per the instructions on the feed bag (often 8 weeks, or point of lay).

HOWEVER, if you are raising Cornish cross (also written Cornish X) chicks for meat, then they should only be offered all-you-can-eat feed for the first 7 days. After that, remove their food at night and give it back first thing in the morning. This will prevent them from gaining weight too quickly. "They're for meat, so why don't I want them gaining weight quickly?" you might ask! Well, Cornish X birds will gain weight SO quickly that their legs break under them or they have heart attacks. As you can imagine, both will decrease your meat yield! :) I have followed this protocol with 2 batches of broiler birds so far and only lost 1 in each batch to a sudden nighttime death (I presume heart attack).
