Best Answer

It would be better to apply a true primer, but short of that, if you sand the surface with a fine grit paper, it should have no problem accepting the paint.

Can you paint a semi gloss oil straight after you paint high gloss oil?

What paint would paint alumimum and wood siding equally well?

If it is bare aluminum and wood siding, they need to be primed prior to painting. The best primer for aluminum is a water based primer like zinsser's bulls-eye 123. The best primer for the wood siding is an oil-based primer such as zinnser's cover-stain. You want to use a water-based top-coat on both surfaces to give it better color retention, and durability through harsh weather conditions. If it is already painted, sand down parts that are coming off, pressure wash the surface, wait 24hours to dry and paint again. Remember, the paint you topcoat it with is only as good as the coating underneath it.

What is colorwashing?

Color washing is when you get paint (usually poster paint) mix it with water, so it has a watery consistency, and then paint or "wash" it on to paper which usually has a wax crayon drawing on it so it shows because the paint won't stick to it. Color washing is a decorative painting technique where a thin glaze (or water-based wash) is applied over the base coat of paint to create an effect of subtle layers of color.

What do you do before you paint a room?

I think you give it a primary coat such as white, and then you paint itANS:The time spent in surface preparation will pay off with a better result. Wash the walls. Kitchens, especially, have a thin coat of grease from cooking. Use a product such as TSP (if available) to cut excessive grease.Spackle and sand any surface imperfections.Lightly sand or steel-wool all paint that is going to be covered so the new paint won't peel.Remove all of the outlet and switch covers.Mask edges and trim.Paint the whole area with a good quality primer if you will be changing colors drastically or spot prime over bare spackling.Never put incompatible paint over any existing paint. Latex will go over latex but oil over latex usually requires a primer. Read and follow the application instructions on the paint can.

How do you apply auto paint over a car's clear coat?

The clear coat applied to auto finishes is essentially the same material as the paint -- except for the ingredients that add color. It's clear paint. Wash the surface to free it of anything that might be stuck to it, including water soluble things (dirt, oils and such). Then remove stuff you need to use solvent on (like road tar). With the surface clean and free of anything but the original finish, sand it (or just scuff it in all areas to be painted), mask it off, wipe it down, and apply your new finish. Preparation is the key to a good finished product, and the best paint job starts with the best preparation. No good painter will apply a coating over an improperly prepared surface. Said another way, paint jobs are made or broken in the prep work.
