I think restaurants that offer this system is great. To gauge what a meal is worth is simple. firstly see if the food is cooked fresh, secondly gauge the service provided, thirdly the presentation of the food and the quality, fourth look at the area you are in and see what other venues are charging near by. If you have enjoyed your food and service pay what you would pay at another establishment with the same features and add a little more so the restaurant owner knows you appreciated it. If you don't enjoy the food pay what you would pay for a meal on special at your local pub.

pretty expensive for a small meal
How much you should expect to pay at a decent steakhouse depends on which steakhouse you dine at. Depending on the location, steakhouse, and meal you order, it is not unlikely to pay at least $30 per person.
We used euros in Europe to pay for our meal.
