The most preventable form of anemia is iron-deficiency anemia. In this case, it is important to eat foods rich in iron (or fortified with iron). In addition, taking Ferrous Sulfate tablets, as prescribed by a physician or nurse practitioner, would help to readily correct the problem of iron-deficiency anemia.

Vitamin B-12 deficiency anemia is another one that can be often treated with just B-12 supplementation (as directed by your doctor). However, if B-12 deficiency anemia is caused by lack of intrinsic factor (IF) in the stomach, then B-12 would need to be given by injection (in order to bypass the otherwise needed absorption of B-12 in the stomach).

Anemias due to blood loss require medical and, sometimes, surgical intervention. There are also a whole array of other anemias which require specific trreatment.

Consume a reasonable diet, adequate in protein and iron (as well as folic acid and vitamin B12).

Iron deficiency anemia, which is what I assume you are referring to, is most common among females because they lose lots of iron during menstruation. Vegetarians, woman with especially long periods, endurance athletes and pregnant woman are at higher risks. If you are not a vegetarian, you should try to eat lots of lean red meats in addition to leafy green vegetables as those are the the best sorces of iron. Red mean is a hema (animal) iron and vegetables is a non-hema (non-animal) iron. Hema iron is more easily absorbed by the body, but if you eat non-hema iron and hema iron in conjunction, it boost absorption of the non-hema iron. Vitamin C boosts absorption as well. So for example, if a person ate a steak or hamburger and a spinach salad and apple slices, they would be consuming a meal that is likely to boost their iron levels. If you are a vegetarian, you might substitute the burger for some type of red or white bean (beans are high in iron) or perhaps a tofu burger. Also, many cereals are iron fortified, and although they are the most easily absorbed form of iron, if you eat a bowl of cereal with a glass or juice you would be starting out your day well. You should just Google foods which are high in iron, print off a list, and stick it to your fridge so you can stalk up on iron rich foods next time you go to the store. In addition, I would recommend going to CVS or Walgreen's and getting slow-release Fe. Take one tablet a day if you are reasonably sized, probably one every other day if you are under 100 pounds - read the package.

Most cases of anemia are the result of an inadequate diet; the most important nutrients for preventing anemia are the B vitamin complex (particularly B12) and iron. There are some forms of anemia, such as sickle cell anemia, which are genetic, and therefore not related to diet.
