Information on pinching back tomatoes?

Tomato plants will put up one main stem and then grow side stems off of the main stem. Suckers will start growing out of the area where the side stem shoots off of the main stem. To prune or pinch your sucker off, simply grab it at its base and snap off. I have linked an article that also gives a photo to show how easy it is to prune your tomato plants.

How do you prune tomato plants?

Tomato plants can be pruned by removing the "sucker" stems that grow between the main stem and the side stem. You will notice they look like a small leaf that starts growing into a stem. It comes out at a 45 degree angle and is easy to spot.

Why eggplant will not produce eggplant from flower?

If your tomato plants are not producing anything (except blossoms), you might have a pollination problem, or you might have planted seeds from a store-bought tomato that have been cross-pollinated and are more or less sterile. This presumes that they are blossoming but are not producing fruit. If, on the other hand, your tomato plants are producing fruit but are performing poorly, they are underfed, underwatered or you have not pruned them properly. Make sure you feed them a good general purpose fertilizer two or three times after the plants have developed, and most importantly, prune them heavily!!! You must remove all the leafing branches except for the top three or four at all times during the growth of the plant or you will grow nothing but leaves and a few underdeveloped puny tomatoes. This means that you will be removing branches or suckers or both every day throughout the growing season. Do not remove the producing growths, just the leafy branches. And please note this does not apply to Tiny Tims and other dwarfed plants as they grow so branchy they are nearly impossible to prune; these plants will produce hundreds of tiny tomatoes without any pruning whatsoever.

How do you pluck a tomato plant?

This depends on the type of tomato plant. There are two main types: determinate and indeterminate. Determinate tomatoes branch and grow in a pre-determined pattern and for the most part they maintain their bush-like shape. After fruiting they are generally done for the season. Indeterminate tomato plants continue to grow as long as the weather remains suitable, and can sprawl all over the place. For this reason they are usually supported by stakes or a trellis. They branch out all over the place and need more pruning. All tomato plants get suckers, which grow from the joint between a leaf and stem. Suckers below the first blossoms should always be removed, no matter if your plant is determinate or indeterminate. On determinate tomatoes, you may not have to trim above the first blossom. Typically these plants take care of their own branching. However, if too many branches appear you might want to thin a few out. A tomato plant with 3 or 4 branches will generally produce the best yields and best tomatoes. The more branches the smaller the tomatoes. Also, the new branches use up energy which should go into the ripening tomatoes. Indeterminate tomatoes require constant pruning, because they will try to send out many new branches. Again, you want to limit the number of branches to 3 or 4.
