Unless you really wanted to, it would be best not to. Lot's of things will be confusing and you won't understand many things or know any of the characters. If you start from the first series, you get introduced to all the clans and cats just like the main character does, so it's easier. Also, if you read the New Prophecy and then go back to the first series then it will have spoiled it... and you might not understand some things much. But if you are dying to, nothing is going to happen to you.
