You can run 10w-40 but only in warm weather. In cold weather it will get way too thick and will cause the engine to run "dry" on start up. Best all around is 5w - 20 Synthetic Oil. It stays the same thickness(viscosity) no matter what the temperature and you can go 5000 miles between changes and ALWAYS CHANGE THE FILTER!!!
Well according to Harley these are your Oil's 99816-1040Lube 10W40 - Quart99816-2050Lube 20W50 - Quart99816-50Lube 50 - Quart99816-60Lube 60 - Quartor you can run one Oil in all holes.
10W40 is a thinner oil, and would allow the engine to run more freely, and although both are suitable for winter usage, a thinner oil will usually help the engine start more easily in cold weather.
no car has to have 10w40 its only choice 10w40 means that the oil can range from 10 weight to 40 weight so its only if you want to run a thicker oil like to cover up a knock or something like that Secondary Answer: The above is not really correct. 10w40 has the cold flow ability of a 10 weight oil and is a 40 weight oil at full temperature. This does not mean that it gets thicker as it gets warmer, that completely defies the laws of science. There are currently no new US market cars that require 10w40. 10w40 was the recommended oil on some older cars.
Yitou can. But its not recommended. It wont run right. Stick with the manufacturers recommended weight.
i have had my big red since new. always run 10w40 Valvoline, never a problem!
The 1998 Ford/Mercury Villager came equipped in the 3.0L V6. For this application 0W30 and 5W30 are specified for all-season use. 10W40 may result in decreased fuel economy and is not needed for this application. No damage will be sustained if 10W40 is run or used as top-off.
According to the manual (Suzuki RM125), it says to run 10W40. They make an 80W gear oil and I have used it but it did no better or worse than automotive 10W40. 80W gear oil is approximately equivelant to 25W engine oil, because engine oils and gear oils use a different rating standard
6 quarts of oil. Stop at 5.5 of course and let it settle, then check. BMW says to run 10w40 in the winter, and 20w50 in the summer.
The main difference between 10W-40 oil and 15W-40 oil is that 15W-40 oil has a higher viscosity than 10W-40 oil. 10W-40 oil allows the engine to run freely.
The old mini with combined engine & gearbox oil was 10w40. In warmer climates like Southern California we run 20/50 all year long www.HeritageGarage.com
I would recommend 10w30 or 10w40 for higher milage engine. IF your under 10 degrees F then run a 0w30.
