Nissan Altima

The Nissan Altima is a medium-sized sedan built by Nissan, and is arguably a successor of the Nissan Bluebird. Manufactured from 1993 to the present, the car has been more luxurious, more powerful, and larger than the Nissan Sentra.

What is the correct gap for spark plugs on a 1995 Mitsubishi eclipse?

On my '98 GSX it's .032.

AnswerThe manufacture of the plug you buy for you car (your Mitsubishi) should come 'Pre Gaped' ie; no need to gap them. I have or my car has a Mitsubishi engine in it and I use NGK plugs for it. You'll find NGK's in most Motorcycle engines and other high rev engines.

IMO....

Just spoke with the auto parts store. The gap for a 1995 Eclipse RS is .044

It is under the drivers footwell on the right hand side. There should be a cover over it and it should come off easily by pulling the bottom left corner of it. Don't ask me what all the fuses are for, but there is a diagram on the internet somewhere.

Fuel Filters

Nissan Frontier

Where is the cabin filter located in the 2008 Nissan Altima?

Below and behind the glove box. You do not have to remove the glove box(it will make it easier) but it is hard to do the first time and a breeze thereafter. On a cool day locate the tab on a long slender plastic cover to the cabin filter. It is very awkward to reach. It will easily remove and reveal a small white fabic tab to the filter itself. The filter is larger than the opening if you can believe it - don't ask me why. You will have to get a feel for how the filter will bend in one direction and not the other in order to get it out without tearing the tab off. Remove the filter and then vacuum the area and yourself before replacing with the new filter. It will be Sooo much easier the second time. Good luck.

How To

How to take a distributor apart on a 94 Nissan Altima?

To remove the distributor cap remove the two screws. To remove the distributor, you must remove the access plate on the passenger side behind the passenger side front tire. Use a socket and ratchet to turn the crankshaft pulley to top dead center. There is an arrow on block at top of pulley. Allign the second mark from the left on the pulley with this arrow. Remove distributor cap and see if rotor is pointing to the #1 cylinder contact point that is marked on the cap. If so you are at top dead center. If it is pointing `180 degrees away from the #1 then rotate crankshaft 360 degrees and you will be at top dead center. Now remove the two bolts that hold the distributor on. Gently pull the distributor out. you may have to turn it a little either way but it should just pull out.

Does a 2003 Nissan Altima 3.5 have a timing chain or a timing belt?

I'm looking for the same answer myself for my 1997 Altima I swore I have been told that it is a chain. But I'm looking for a definite answer. Try this website for more info on the chain or belt http://www.nisspartswholesale.com/200-SXS-001_1996_parts.html

To answer both of your questions Nissan Altima 1993 and up have timing chains and if you have looked for them you're not going to find it unless you take the valve cover off and you will see it on the left side but be thankful for one thing that Nissan guarantees that the timing chain will last the life of the engine which is about 250,000 miles.

Update:Just a confirmation, all the Nissan Altimas with either 4 cylinder or V6 engines had timing chains, not belts. This applies to the KA24DE, VQ35DE, and QR25DE engines.

: If the Engine has plastic covers where the serpentine belt is running it's usually a Timing Belt. If it is a metal cover you have a Timing Chain

How much does it cost to repair the crankshaft in a 1997 Nissan Altima?

The engine is blown: bebuild or replace.

Anyone offering to "repair" your crankshaft is a scammer. Do not ever deal with them again. The only situation where a crankshaft can be repaired (in situ especially) is if there is a timing sensor on the end of the crank that has become dislodged, damaged, misaligned or otherwise prevents the engine computer from being able to pick up appropriate information. Bearings should not be replaced unless rebuilding the entire engine and a twisted or otherwise damaged crankshaft is JUNK and should be replaced. Therefore, repairing the crank is actually replacing it which REQUIRES an engine rebuild. The journal bearings on the crank need to be properly matched and possibly machined (the crank) to fit correctly without knocking and leading to a speedy demise of your newly built powerplant. Buy a new crankshaft, a rebuild kit and a video. You can rebuild an engine with the right tools (most of which you can borrow or rent) and some friends to help get the engine in and out. This is the most difficult part and with a little attention and patience, (and the friends) it can be done in a weekend not including any machining (which is generally not necessary when REPLACING the parts that are damaged.) Just replacing the engine is a job anyone can do with a hoist and ratchets, screwdrivers and friends.

Additionally, if you had an early vintage, extremely rare dusenberg or flathead V8 that was IRREPLACEABLE you might consider having a talented machine shop try to fix it, but on a '90s Nissan it simply is not worth it.

How can you get rid of a 'rubbing' noise coming from the passenger door?

Check the bolts and brackets. the bolts may be losening up. Also the brackets can become wraped from excessive weight on the door. As a temporary fix, find a gap and try placing some sticky foam insulation to pad it... also try to find where it's rubbing and place it there.

How do you fix power windows on a 1994 Nissan Altima?

Usually it's either the window regulator or window motor. You can buy both online for about half of what the dealer will charge for the part. It could also be the master switch on the driver's side, but if all the other windows are working fine, I'd replace the regulator and motor. I bought the regulator with motor combo for $81 delivered recently and my window is working perfectly now.

How do you replace a knock sensor on a 1995 Nissan Altima?

The knock sensor (if underneath the vechicle)is located above the oil filter just to the left, behind your antifreze return. It is a pain to get at, only one screw takes a couple hours to reach it. I filed (narow) down and old wrench because i didnt have enough room, once loosen i did it by hand. you can see it from the top of the motor between the 2nd and third fuel injectors (you can only see the screw you CAN NOT see the knock sensor). Have fun! ALSO IT YOUR CAR IS OCCASIONALLY STALLING RUNNING RICH AND SOME BLACK SMOKE WITH YOUR RPMS JUMPING AROUND. IT MAY BE YOUR TEMPETURE SENSOR EVEN THOUGH THE COMPUTER READING SAYS KNOCK. ITS $21 COMPARED TO $180 AND IT WAS THE CASE FOR ME. COUPLE MINUTES COMPARED TO SEVERAL HOURS. THANKS

How do you replace the alternator on a 1998 Nissan Altima?

Always remove the ground wire on the battery first! Then, loosen the belt and slide it off of the alternator wheel. Unplug the alternator. Remove the mounting bolts. Remove the alternator. Reverse the process for installation. BE SURE TO PLUG THE BATT BACK IN. It happens more often than you think ;)

..and be sure to carefully look at how the alternator belt is routed over and around the pulleys. The belt is a "serpertine" type and is a pain to figure out!!!!

Where is the idler pully on a 1997 cavalier?

Get a standard 3/8" socket wrench, just the socket wrench, you don't need any sockets. Look on the idler pulley bracket for a square hole in the bracket. Place the socket driver in the square hole. You can now easily move the idler pulley to relieve the belt tension and remove the belt. I found that my 3/8" ratcheting socket wrench was too thick in profile to fit in the rather narrow space on my 1998 Cavalier. So, I bought and used a 3/8" breaker bar which happened to have a thinner profile and it fit and worked very well. There is also a thin profile tool made especially for serpentine belts with little clearance at the tensioner.

How do you replace the headlight bulb located on a 2002 Nissan Altima?

Good job pcsgrp35se. Here's some changes to reflect ground plate addition recall due to headlight ground problems. Also some other suggestions.

Low Beam Headlight Replacement 2003 Nissan Altima

Passenger Side:

1) Use a 10 mm socket to remove the two bolts on the radiator overflow bottle. Move the bottle and place it in an upright position between the radiator and the dipstick (if the engine is cold) or on top of the grille by the hood release. You will notice that the overflow rubber tube will lift off the windshield-washer bottle cap. Replace the cap so nothing falls in.

2) On the passenger-side fender you will see a bracket that one of the bolts came from. That too is bolted to the fender with a 10 mm head bolt. Remove the bolt and bracket.

3) You will see a large round cover; this is where the low beam bulb is located. Remove the cover by turning it right/clockwise (as viewed from the outside-front of the car) or by turning it left/counterclockwise (as viewed from inside the car). When you can no longer turn the cover, pull it out.

Note: I found it difficult to align the covers behind the lights. You have to figure out which little square goes where on the lamp assembly. I put a mark on the cover before I took it off and then I put another mark on the lamp assembly, aligned with the mark on the cover, after I turned the cover to remove it. Doing this will make it easy to reinstall the cover.

4) The headlight wires run through a rubber gasket in the center of the cap that will prevent you from completely removing the cover. However, you can pull the cover back a few inches and/or slide the wires through the gasket toward the bulb to make room to change the bulb. I suggest that you see how the bulb goes in so it aligns correctly.

5) There is a metal clip that holds in all H1 bulbs. This one is a real pain to get off. On the bottom of the bulb housing you will see a little ring. First push it down (towards the front of the car), then push it to the left (toward the passenger side). Flip the clip all the way up. Once you flip it up you will notice it has two places where it holds the bulb in, one on each side. You may want to use a 4" long piece of tape to hold the clip up and out of the way.

6) The bulb may have a separate ground plate with a spade terminal for the ground wire mounted on the base of the bulb. Slide this base over the spade terminal end of the new bulb with the flat sides of the bulb base and ground plate aligned. (If there is no ground plate you will only need to remove the hot wire from the base of the bulb leaving the ground wire in place)

7) Put the bulb in and clip it in place being sure the metal clip is all the way up. Once the bulb is in position move the metal clip down and toward the driver's side and secure the little ring end to hold the bulb in place.

8) To install the turn-signal and high-beam lights, simply turn each to the right/clockwise (as viewed from the outside-front of the car) or left/counterclockwise (as viewed from inside the car) and pull the bulb out.

9) Put everything back together.

Driver Side:

1) Remove the 10 mm bolt that holds the air box down (this is on the gold colored bracket on the driver-side fender).

2) Release the two clips that hold the air-filter box together and remove the filter. You can then lift the top of the air box out of the way. Loosen the steel clamp on the flexible rubber intake tube running toward the top of the engine to make this easier.

3) Remove the ram air assembly along the front of the hood. There are 4 plastic push pins on this assembly. Do not try to pry these off. Gently pry only the center plug of the pin up. Once the center plug is up they come right out. (To install push the push pin in with the center plug up then push the center plug down to secure.

4) Pull the air box straight up and out. It takes a little force because it is held in place by two rubber-male shaped plugs that go into holes. Once you have this out, the bulbs are easy to access.

5) Replace bulb using steps 3 thru 7 in Passenger side directions.

Replacing the air box:

6) Align the air box's two pointed rubber connectors with their holes and push down hard. Make sure the front air tube is out of the way. One note: there is another intake path at the bottom of the air box. Make sure that the air box is properly aligned with it.

7) After you get the bottom of the air box in, install the bolt on the fender, replace the air filter, and then replace the ram air assembly with its four push pins.

Notes: I do suggest that after you get the bulbs in and are sure that the round covers are in place correctly (as I mentioned, that was the biggest problem I had) to turn the lights on and make sure they work. I say this because, as you will see, putting the covers on sometimes causes the red wire to disengage from the bulb.

Once you get all the junk out of the way (the air box on the driver's side and the radiator overflow on the passenger side) you will see a 10 mm bolt right in the middle of the headlight assembly. This is for headlight adjustment.

Open up the hood, and go in behind the fixture where the light is located. Sometimes there is an access panel on top. Open it and reach down inside and grab the bulb's socket. Twist the socket a quarter turn counter clockwise, and pull out the socket. Grab the bulb, and pull it straight out. To replace the new bulb, never touch it with your bare fingers, as this will greatly shorten the bulb's life, if it even work's at all. Use a tissue or something else in that order to handle the new bulb. Push the new bulb into the socket, put the socket back into the housing, and twist a quarter turn clockwise to secure the socket into the fixtu

    • seems that you have to remove the coolant bottle(two screws), and also the unscrew the washer fluid bottle, after that you can reach the socket that holds the bulb. There is a wire that holds the bulb in. if you loosen the screw you can tip up the wire and be careful to leave it in place...also the long side of the wire seems to connect to ground wire for the light...

Well, I didn't get very far, but you need to replace the headlamp bulb, right?? I went to two auto part stores and got two different bulb numbers, discovered that the 9005 was the HIGH beam, decided that a 9007 would "probably work". Wrong answer, I could have saved some time by reading my manual before I went shopping. I was able to get at the driver's side lamp by removing the air filter housing, then the low-beam lamp housing opens with a 1/4 turn of a plastic disk. Strangest bulb I've ever seen, secured by a fancy spring clip and two screws, and widely spaced push-on terminals fed by individual wires.

for me will be to read the Chilton manual the next time I go shopping. Not much help, I know, but that's all I've got!

3rd Generation (2002+) Nissan Altima Headlight Bulbs Installation Procedure Written by pcsgrp35se, Edited and Pictures by V4

Passenger Side:

First push it down (towards the ground), then push it to the left (as viewed from the outside-front of the car). You may want to use a 4" long piece of tape to hold the clip up and out of the way.

6) Put the bulb in and clip it in place.

7) To install the turn-signal and high-beam lights, simply turn each to the right/clockwise (as viewed from the outside-front of the car) or left/counterclockwise (as viewed from inside the car) and pull the bulb out.

2) Release the two clips that hold the air-filter box together and remove the filter. You can then lift the top of the air box out of the way.

3) (see pictures) Pull the plastic tube from the under-hood "ram air" assembly towards the front of the car (it will move about 1/4 inch) and then pull the air box and straight out. It takes a little force because it is held in place by two rubber-male shaped plugs that go into holes. Once you have this out, the bulbs are easy to access.

Replacing the air box:

4) Align the air boxs two pointed rubber connectors with their holes and push down hard. Make sure the front air tube is out of the way. One note: there is another intake path at the bottom of the air box. Make sure that the air box is properly aligned with it and the ram air intake.

5) After you get the bottom of the air box in, install the bolt on the fender, replace the air filter, and then finish putting everything on.

Note: Total time to remove everything, change the bulbs, and re-install was 15 minutes. I do suggest that after you get the bulbs in and are sure that the round covers are in place correctly (as I mentioned, that was the biggest problem I had) to turn the lights on and make sure they work. I say this because, as you will see, putting the covers on sometimes causes the red wire to disengage from the bulb.
